How to Acid stain Concrete

How to use Acid Stain for Concrete Statues.

-------------------------------------------

Acid stain is one of my favorite finishes for concrete stepping stones and statuary—it's quick, looks beautiful, and lasts for years. Best of all, no two pieces will look the same, as each reacts differently to create a truly unique finish. It gives concrete a stunning look and finish.

Preparation

Start with a clean statue that's completely free of any casting oils or residue. This step is critical for proper stain absorption. Wash with soap and water. The more statues you can do at one time the better.

Application

Apply the acid stain using either a brush or sprayer, working from bottom to top. This technique is essential—if you start at the top, any drips or runs will create permanent streaks that cannot be covered, even with multiple coats.

Use thin, even coats rather than heavy applications. Take your time and avoid oversaturating the surface.

Equipment Note: Acid will quickly corrode the springs in cheap hand sprayers. Either plan to replace them frequently or invest in a pump-up sprayer designed specifically for acid stain or use a brush. Even with a sprayer you will still need a brush to dab it into tight spots.

Drying and Cleaning

Allow the stain to sit for at least six hours. Once dry, wash off the residue using soap and water, then rinse thoroughly. Let the statue air dry completely before moving to the next step.

Sealing

Sealing is mandatory—not optional. The sealer is what brings out the true, vibrant colors of the acid stain. Apply it only after the statue is completely dry.

Safety

Always wear rubber gloves, eye protection, and old clothing you don't mind ruining. Acid stain will permanently stain fabric.

Where to Buy

We purchase our acid stains from DirectColors.com. If you're unsure which color to choose, they offer small sample bottles so you can test before committing to full-size containers.
