Tips and help for making concrete statues

This page includes information on mixing , pouring ,painting and marketing of concrete statues .

Concrete Mix : My favorite mix is one part portland two parts sand and three parts pea sized gravel. You do not have to use gravel but it does save money and makes the statue a little more durable .Use of gravel in small statues is not recomended.

Acid Staining : Acid staining is a quick and easy way to add color to concrete statues. Let the statue cure for seven days make sure to wash with soap and water. After it is dry find a plastic pan that you can set the statue in as you can reuse the acid that runs off of the statue, but make sure you put it in a different container. Pour your stain into a spray bottle and spray your statue ,start from the top and work your way to the bottom. It is not a bad ideal to have a small paint brush  to help with tight spots and runs. when finished let dry for a few hours to one day, then wash with a water and vinegar solution, I just use soap and water. Let dry then seal with a good concrete sealer. You should always wear rubber gloves and saftey glasses when using acid. Here are some samples .

Mold release to use with latex molds : Mix 8 parts of denatured alcohol to one part caster oil and thats it. Make sure you shake it up each time you use it. Apply to inside of latex mold , do not over spray all you need is a fine mist.
